The program will run Monday mornings from 9:15- 12:35.
Social Studies and Arts & Crafts led by Bozena Hrycyna
November 15th to December 13th 9:15 to 10:45 am (for those participating in the oil pastels class there will be a short supervised break in between classes)
This class is for students in grades 4 and 5. We will be exploring the culture and history of the original peoples of this land - the Anishnaabe, through a novel study of The Game of Silence. The children will have the opportunity to make connections between the story, and local geography and history of the Great Lakes region.
The Game of Silence is the second novel in a series by acclaimed Anishnaabe author Louise Erdrich. It takes place during the time of settler expansion into traditional Ojibway/Chippewa territories around Lake Superior and is told through the eyes of the young female protagonist Omakayas, as she comes of age in this time of change.
The children will learn about the traditional lifestyles of the Ojibway and develop a deeper appreciation of the connection between people and the land. They’ll have an opportunity to experience working with natural materials and develop greater dexterity and focus through several craft projects.
